Afshin Safa, M.D.
Afshin Safa, M.D. is a board certified Radiation Oncology specialist who serves as the clinical director of research and co-medical director at the Leavey Cancer Center at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. He is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA, where he is active in teaching surgical radiation oncology. He is also an active clinical investigator for NIH sponsored clinical trials for Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG).
Dr. Safa is the Chairman of the Los Angeles Radiological Society (LARS) Continuing Education Committee. He also serves on the Health Economics Committee for the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Safa received his undergraduate education at UCLA where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He earned his M.D. degree at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and continued specialty training in the Department of Radiation Oncology at UCLA where he served as Chief Resident.
In addition to active clinical practice, Dr. Safa has had extensive research experience in the areas of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging in lung cancer and head and neck cancers. His research on radiation therapy technique in head and neck cancer received the First Place Scientific Exhibit Award for Oncology at the Los Angeles Radiological Society. Dr. Safa was given the prestigious RSNA research grant to investigate the role of radiation therapy in prevention of vascular restenosis. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on topics of prostate cancer, head and neck cancer and malignant melanoma. In recognition of his distinguished clinical research activities, Dr. Safa was selected by his peers to be included in Best Doctors in America.
Dr. Safa specializes in prostate brachytherapy, MammoSite brachytherapy, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery, and Triple Image Fusion (CT/MRI/PET) Technology. Dr. Safa is fluent in Persian and Spanish. |
