Afshin Safa, M.D. is a board certified Radiation Oncologist who serves as the medical director at the Leavy Cancer Center at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine. He is Chairman of Cancer Committee and a Radiation Safety Officer at Northridge Hospital.Dr. Safa is the president of the Los Angeles Radiological Society (LARS) - he is the only radiation oncologist to achieve this distinction. He serves on the Health Policy council for the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), which oversees issues of health policies and health care economics at the national level. He serves as the president-elect of California Radiation Oncology Society (SCROS) and a councilor of American college of Radiology (ACR).

Dr. Safa received his undergraduate education at UCLA where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He earned his M.D. degree at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and continued specialty training in radiation oncology at UCLA. Dr. Safa specializes in prostate cancer, gynecological cancers, breast cancer, and brain tumors. Dr. Safa has special expertise in 4Dimensional CT scans to manage tumor and organ motion as well as highly precise radiation utilizing IMRT and IGRT with Trilogy Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT). He specializes in the use of technically advanced treatment modalities such as Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery, and Brachytherapy implants.

In addition to active clinical practice, Dr. Safa has had extensive research experience. He is an active clinical investigator for the NIH, participating in NIH sponsored clinical trials for Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and Southwestern Oncology Group (SWOG). Dr. Safa received the prestigious research grant from Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) to investigate the role of radiation therapy for vascular restenosis. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on topics of prostate cancer, malignant melanoma and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging in lung cancer and head and neck cancers. In recognition of his distinguished service and expertise, Dr. Safa has been continuously selected by his peers to be included in Best Doctors in America for over 8 years.
