Recently awarded "Best Hospital" by the San Fernando Valley chapter of the American Cancer Society, Northridge Hospital Medical Center is proud of  Department of Radiation Oncology at the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center. Radiation treatment is provided by the physicians of Cancer Care Consultants Medical Associates, with Dr. Afshin Safa as the Medical Director and Chairman of the cancer committee.

Treating the mind, body and spirit, the award-winning Thomas & Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center boasts the most comprehensive, technologically-advanced treatments in the Valley and has the distinction of having three esteemed accreditations. Our program has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Approvals (ACOS CoC) since 1980. In addition, the Leavey Cancer Center is fully-accredited by the American College of Radiation Oncology, the Association of Community Cancer Centers and the American College of Surgeons as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.

We are the first facility in the region to offer the Trilogy Linear Accelerator Stereotactic System for image-guided radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery. The Trilogy can treat cancer anywhere in the body by delivering a higher dose of radiation, resulting in fewer treatment sessions. We provide Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided radiation therapy (IGRT) which are the most technologically advanced form of 3D conformal therapy.  These advanced technologies provide the most accurate and precise delivery of radiation therapy to tumors while minimizing exposure to nearby normal healthy tissue. This results in a higher chance for cure while minimizing side effects.

We are also proud to be the first center in the San Fernando Valley to introduce Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery, a minimally invasive technique used to treat a variety of brain tumors and functional disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia. The gold standard in brain surgery, Gamma Knife is a revolutionary, non-invasive surgery tool proven by decades of research and clinical data. This technology provides the most accurate targeting available in the realm of radiation treatment. Patients treated with the Gamma Knife usually complete their treatment in a single session in one day, as opposed to requiring longer hospital stays after open brain surgery or traditional courses of radiation therapy which last a month or two. Not a knife at all, Gamma Knife delivers 201 beams of gamma radiation to a tumor without a single incision or even shaving the hair. Because it’s performed under local anesthesia, patients can return home from the hospital the same day.

Services offered also include HDR prostate brachytherapy, prostate permanent seed implantation, MammoSite brachytherapy for breast cancer, and gynecologic HDR brachytherapy. We also offer prostate implant program for patients with prostate cancer, a breast preservation program for women, and a voice-sparing program for patients with cancers of the throat.

Research activities include active participation in national oncology group protocols, namely the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG).
