Harold and Carol Pump Department of Radiation Oncology at the Thomas & Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center

Recently awarded "Best Hospital" by the San Fernando Valley chapter of the American Cancer Society, Northridge Hospital Medical Center is proud of its Department of Radiation Oncology at the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center. Radiation treatment is provided by the physicians of Cancer Care Consultants Medical Associates, with Dr. Michael Steinberg as Medical Director, Dr. Afshin Safa as the co-medical director and director of research, and Dr. David Huang as the primary radiation oncologist. The department has distinguished itself by having the latest in advanced radiation treatment equipment while delivering quality and compassionate care with excellent therapy and nursing staff. Patients undergoing radiation therapy at our Cancer Center have their care closely coordinated with their physicians who provide medical oncology, surgery, and primary care services. Case management incorporates multi-disciplinary tumor board discussion and departmental peer review. Research activities include active participation in national oncology group protocols, namely the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG).
Radiation treatment equipment at Northridge Hospital's Leavey Cancer Center includes:

  • Dual High Energy Linear Accelerator Radiation Treatment
  • Multiple Energy Electron Beam
  • ADAC Virtual Simulation
  • CT/MRI/PET “triple” fusion technology for optimum computerized tumor localization
  • 3-Dimensional Computer Treatment Planning
  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
  • High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy
  • Prostate Seed Implantation
  • Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery
  • Breast MammoSite Brachytherapy

The Department of Radiation Oncology provides treatment for a variety of cancer diagnoses. It has an active prostate implant program for patients with prostate cancer, a breast preservation program for women, and a voice-sparing program for patients with cancers of the throat.

Services offered include HDR prostate brachytherapy, prostate permanent seed implantation, MammoSite brachytherapy for breast cancer, and interstitial or intracavitary gynecologic HDR brachytherapy. We also provide Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) which is the most technologically advanced form of 3D conformal therapy. IMRT is a precise method of delivering high doses of radiation therapy to tumors while minimizing exposure to nearby normal healthy tissue. This results in a higher chance for cure while minimizing side effects.

We are also proud to be the first center in the San Fernando Valley to introduce Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery, a minimally invasive technique used to treat a variety of brain tumors and functional disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia. This technology provides the most accurate targeting available in the realm of radiation treatment. Patients treated with the Gamma Knife usually complete their treatment in a single session in one day, as opposed to requiring longer hospital stays after open brain surgery or traditional courses of radiation therapy which last a month or two.
