Scalp Skin Care

You may base or shower daily with warm water.

Do not use hot water.

Use mild shampoo to minimize irritation and dryness to the scalp.

Nivea, Eucerin, pure Aloe Vera lotion may be used in the treatment area for any skin that is dry, itchy or reddened.

If you notice any areas of skin break down, particularly behind you ears, notify our oncology nurse or physicians. Medication will be prescribed.

Hair Loss

Your hair will begin to thin after two to three weeks of treatment. That will continue until the end of treatment. The hair may be totally gone in the treatment field by the end of treatment. Shop for a wig or scarf before hair loss begins. In some patients the hair loss is temporary, and hair may begin to return within several months following the completion of treatment.

Diet

Eat a well balanced diet and do not try to lose weight during therapy.

Dietary supplements may be helpful if you are having trouble maintaining your weight. Our oncology nurse can discuss the supplements with you if needed. Your weight will be monitored weekly.

Headaches or Nausea

If you have headaches or nausea that come on after the start of radiation therapy, please notify our oncology nurse or physician.

Emotional Support

Emotional support is very important at this time. If you have questions about physical closeness or sexual relations, please speak with our doctor or oncology nurse.

Fatigue

You will probably develop fatigue during the course of the radiation therapy to the brain. However, the severity and duration will vary according to your past medical history and present treatment area. Increasing your rest time will help manage this side effect. It usually resolves within four to eight weeks following completion of treatment.
