3-D Treatment Planning
Conventional radiation treatment planning often arranges radiation treatment beams using a single “slice “ through the area of concern, and then calculates the necessary dose of radiation to be delivered based on this limited picture. This has been the accepted standard of radiation treatment for many years.
With the advent of sophisticated computers and complex radiation treatment planning computer systems, we can now offer our patients a more technologically advanced approach using 3-D treatment planning. Commercial planning systems such as the ADAC Labs Pinnacle3 system and Philips Medical AcQSim and AcQPlan systems allow your physician to design and implement treatment based on the full anatomic picture.
Using CT (computerized tomography) scanning, the entire target area is outlined, as are adjacent organs of concern. The computer then renders all beam arrangements and calculates the dose to be given using the entire target picture, and not just a single slice. The end result is that areas that areas that may have been receiving too little or too much dosage using the conventional approach can now be adjusted to its proper level. This in turn may translate into improved treatment success while decreasing potential undesirable side effects.
